Virginia IT & Cybersecurity Careers

Explore IT, cybersecurity, technology, networking, cloud, data and related career opportunities with the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Virginia has a large technology workforce and a particularly strong cybersecurity environment, with state government, federal agencies, defense contractors, technology companies, universities and other organizations employing IT and cyber professionals throughout the Commonwealth.

Why Virginia?

Virginia is one of the country’s major technology and cybersecurity employment centers. The Commonwealth’s technology workforce extends across state government, defense, intelligence, transportation, healthcare, education, financial services and private industry.

For an entry-level candidate, this creates multiple potential pathways rather than requiring a search for only one type of cybersecurity position.

IT & Cyber Career Areas

Virginia government and technology employers recruit across a broad range of information technology and cybersecurity disciplines.

Information Technology

IT support, systems administration, technical services, enterprise systems and technology operations.

Cybersecurity

Cyber defense, information security, security operations, risk, vulnerability management and incident response.

Networking

Network administration, network operations, infrastructure, telecommunications and secure communications.

Cloud & Infrastructure

Cloud services, enterprise infrastructure, systems engineering, virtualization and technology modernization.

Applications & Data

Software development, application support, databases, analytics and data management.

IT Management

Technology project management, governance, procurement, auditing, architecture and program support.

Virginia Information Technologies Agency (VITA)

VITA is the Commonwealth’s central information technology agency. Its responsibilities include statewide technology services, enterprise IT, cybersecurity infrastructure and technology leadership for Virginia’s executive branch agencies.

VITA’s career program includes traditional positions as well as emerging-talent opportunities. VITA specifically identifies internship, junior associate and associate programs that provide professional development opportunities for high school students, college students and recent college graduates.

Emerging Talent at VITA

VITA’s emerging-talent programs are particularly relevant to candidates who are still early in their careers.

The agency has offered internships and junior/associate-level development opportunities. VITA’s 2026 internship program, for example, was open to students in two-year, four-year and graduate-level programs, including students graduating in 2026.

Because program eligibility and application dates change, candidates should check VITA’s current career information rather than relying on an old internship deadline.

Virginia State Government Jobs

Jobs.Virginia.Gov is the Commonwealth’s central state-government employment portal. Candidates can search by job title, location, department and category.

State government careers exist throughout the Commonwealth, not only in Richmond or Northern Virginia.

Entry-Level Candidates: Broaden Your Search

A common mistake is searching only for jobs with “cybersecurity” in the title. Entry-level candidates should search across multiple technology categories.

Consider searching for:

IT Support Help Desk Technical Support Network Support Systems Administration Cybersecurity Information Security Application Support Data Cloud

Look Beyond the Commonwealth IT Agency

VITA is important, but it is not the only Virginia government technology employer. State agencies, universities, transportation organizations, public safety organizations and other Commonwealth entities have their own technology needs.

Virginia’s central employment system also notes that some agencies and institutions use separate application systems. Candidates should follow the application instructions associated with the specific position.

Examples include:

  • Virginia Department of Transportation
  • Virginia Department of Health
  • Virginia State Police
  • Virginia universities and colleges
  • Virginia Community College System
  • Department of Environmental Quality
  • State Corporation Commission
  • Other Commonwealth agencies
